Solar Eclipse 1999


Eclipse We watched the eclipse from a field outside the town of Niederroedern in Alsace. A thousand other people went to the same hillside on an obscure little country road. It was cloudy over western France that morning. But the indications were that it was worse in other places, so we made do the best we could. The clouds closed in just before totality. We got to see totality for no more than 3 seconds. That was long enough for the image of the corona surrounding the dark orb hanging in the sky to be permanently impressed on my brain. But it was not long enough to take many photographs.

The cloudy sky did allow me to take some interesting pictures of the crescent sun through the clouds. Here are three of them:
